Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin

Note: another review from my previous blog back in 2009. Enjoy!!

That's right--a chick lit novel, Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin. Chick lit is a new kind of genre for me, something I fairly like on occasion, but I never like to admit personally. I'm more into more serious, thoughtful book myself, but it never hurts to once in a while read a more fun-loving, original story about your life as well. Anyway, the heroine in the book, Rachel White, a 30 year old attorney in Manhattan, has just slept with her best friend's fiance, Dex, and has no regret over it. I wasn't sure I was going to have much sympathy for Rachel, basically for the misdeed itself, but after reading her point of view, and learned more about her "best friend" Darcy, who is a shallow, brainless twit, yet pretty and charming at the same time, the kind of girl we all hate, you can't help but feel more compassion for Rachel than Darcy, esp. since Rachel tries to do the right thing by first getting Dex out of her mind and be supportive to Darcy and her wedding, even going all the way out to the other side of the world for a vacation just to get away from the situation, even when she discovers her feelings for Dex are growing. I won't give away the plot or the ending but in the end, Rachel ends up happy and Darcy ends up getting her comeuppance with the world. So if you are like me, one of those women who hate trash novels but want to read something fun, try Something Borrowed. You won't be disappointed.

Update on this blog article (2014):
My opinions now of this book are still the same.  It was an enjoyable read with a very happy ending for Rachel.  This is a girl who has been doing the right thing all her life and has paid her dues and deserves happiness in all respects.  Dex is one lucky man to get such a girl in his life: both smart, hardworking people.

I don't hate Darcy completely, but I do think she does not have much of a brain in her body and uses only the luck God has bestowed upon her to get what she wants.  Her motives are unscrupulous and she even goes so far as to cheat on Dex while still engaged and as a result gets pregnant.  Even though there is a sequel to this novel, Something Blue, where Darcy finds happiness in Britain, it still does not change my opinion of Darcy and her shallow, empty-headed narcissism.

This author made me want to read her other books: Baby Proof and Love the One You're With.
